Judge Rules Donald Trump’s Name Must Remain Off Kennedy Center Facade
Plans to display Donald Trump’s name on the exterior of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts have been paused again following a judicial ruling requiring his name to stay off the building for the time being.
Board Action and Legal Disputes
The issue over the venue’s exterior signage returned to public attention after a House Democrat announced in August 2026 that the Kennedy Center board had voted to place Trump’s name back on the outside of the building. The decision prompted renewed scrutiny and legal challenges regarding the proposed modifications to the building’s facade.
Following the vote and subsequent opposition, the Kennedy Center agreed in mid-August not to proceed with restoring the name before September 8 while legal discussions continued.
Judicial Rulings Maintain Pause
By late August 2026, a judge issued a ruling stipulating that Trump’s name must remain off the Kennedy Center facade for now, delaying the institution’s plan to return the lettering to the exterior walls.
The decision aligns with prior court actions in the dispute. In July 2026, a U.S. court similarly mandated that Trump’s name had to stay off the Kennedy Center during an ongoing appeal. With legal proceedings unresolved, the exterior display on the performing arts center remains unchanged pending further legal developments.
