261 Foreign Nationals Missing in Tibet After Devastating Himalayan Floods
Chinese authorities confirmed that 261 foreign nationals representing 23 countries are missing in Tibet following catastrophic flash floods and mudslides that devastated parts of the Himalayan border region shared with Nepal.
The severe weather disaster swept across the mountainous border zones, triggering immense landslips and cutting off remote communities. Reports indicate that the overall disaster across the Nepal-Tibet area has claimed at least 750 lives and left more than 3,000 people unaccounted for across both sides of the frontier.
Foreign Nationals and Cross-Border Toll
The missing foreign nationals in Tibet include travelers, tourists, and workers from multiple continents. Among those reported missing by international media are 15 British citizens, alongside roughly 100 Nepali nationals who were stranded or swept away on the Tibetan side of the border when the flash floods struck.
Search and rescue operations in the rugged terrain face extreme difficulties due to destroyed road infrastructure, severe mud accumulation, and ongoing weather hazards across high-altitude mountain passes.
Disaster Impact in Kyirong and Surrounding Zones
The flood-ravaged county of Kyirong, a key transit and trade gateway between Tibet and Nepal, was among the hardest-hit areas. Torrential rains destabilized mountain slopes, sending massive mudslides tearing through villages and transport corridors along the border.
The sudden surge of water and debris swallowed buildings and highway stretches, leaving entire groups of local residents and foreign travelers isolated in remote terrain.
Information Flow and State Response
Amid the emergency response, Chinese official channels targeted online rumors and restricted unverified reports regarding the casualty figures and rescue progress. Reports from regional observers highlight tight state control over media access in the flood zones, even as foreign press delegations were conducted through designated areas of Kyirong to view relief efforts.
Consular officials from affected countries continue to liaise with Chinese authorities to track down missing citizens and determine the full extent of foreign casualties in the Himalayan deluge.
