UAE Central Bank and Banque Misr Review US Sanctions Notice Over Iran Crackdown
Egyptian lender Banque Misr has confirmed it is reviewing a sanctions notice issued by the U.S. Department of the Treasury as part of a renewed Washington campaign to cut off financial channels linked to Iran.
U.S. Targets UAE Operations
The U.S. measures specifically target Banque Misr’s branch network in the United Arab Emirates under an expanded effort to isolate Iran economically. U.S. officials allege the bank’s branches have been involved in financial operations associated with Iranian entities.
In response to the action, Banque Misr announced it is conducting a thorough internal review of the U.S. notification. As one of Egypt’s core state-owned banking institutions, Banque Misr plays a central role in the country’s domestic economy and regional trade financing.
Regulatory and Diplomatic Response
Following the notice from Washington, the Central Bank of the United Arab Emirates launched an urgent examination into Banque Misr’s local banking activities to evaluate compliance and operational standing within the country.
The enforcement action has also driven strategic coordination between the two Arab nations, with government and banking officials in Cairo and Abu Dhabi working jointly to address the regulatory challenge and manage potential spillover effects on regional financial channels.
