Federal Government Orders Emergency Closure of 110 Trucking Schools Over English Rules

Federal transportation authorities have ordered an emergency shutdown of 110 truck driving schools across the United States following widespread non-compliance with mandatory English-language proficiency rules and associated commercial driver’s license violations.

The enforcement action was announced by U.S. Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy as part of a broader federal effort to combat fraud in commercial driver’s license (CDL) training programs. Federal officials cited severe lapses in adhering to standard language requirements, which mandate that commercial truck drivers demonstrate sufficient English proficiency to operate safely on public highways, comprehend traffic signs, and communicate with enforcement personnel.

National Enforcement and Regional Impact

The federal action targets institutions across multiple states that failed to enforce language qualifications or engaged in improper licensing practices. Among the areas cited by federal regulators were training facilities located in California and Florida.

Transportation officials specifically identified California as a major state of concern during the investigation, pointing to compliance issues within the state’s commercial driver training infrastructure. Facilities in Florida were also among those shut down during the nationwide enforcement action.

Focus on Licensing Compliance and Safety

The federal government’s emergency orders reflect heightened oversight of training providers that grant qualifications for heavy commercial vehicles. Under federal regulations, CDL schools are required to ensure students meet mandatory instruction criteria and satisfy fundamental safety prerequisites before receiving certification.

The emergency closures prevent the 110 targeted institutions from conducting driver training or certifying new candidates for commercial licenses until compliance issues are resolved under federal administrative standards.
