Honduran Court Drops Charges Against Former President Juan Orlando Hernandez Following U.S. Pardon
A court in Honduras has dropped legal charges against former President Juan Orlando Hernandez, resolving domestic proceedings against the former leader following his release from U.S. custody under a presidential pardon granted by Donald Trump.
Hernandez was convicted in a U.S. federal court in 2024 on drug trafficking charges. In late November 2025, Trump announced his intention to pardon the former Honduran president, leading to Hernandez’s release from a U.S. prison in early December 2025.
Return to Honduras and Legal Resolution
Following his release in the United States, Hernandez returned to Honduras to face domestic legal proceedings involving fraud allegations. Judicial authorities in Honduras subsequently dismissed the remaining charges, closing the legal proceedings against him in his home country.
The high-profile case has attracted international scrutiny throughout Hernandez’s tenure, his conviction in the United States, his subsequent presidential pardon, and his return home to face domestic courts.
