Two Airport Staff Die of Malaria in Germany Linked to Mosquito on Flight
Two airport staff members in Germany have died from malaria following a rare localized outbreak at Frankfurt Airport linked to a mosquito transported aboard an incoming aircraft.
Reports from public health agencies and international news outlets indicate that the workers contracted the infection while on airport grounds. Transmission in non-endemic regions near international travel hubs is commonly referred to as ‘airport malaria,’ occurring when infected mosquitoes travel inside airplanes and exit upon landing.
Health Officials Urge Calm
Following the confirmation of the fatal cases, officials urged calm while authorities investigated the circumstances of the outbreak. Because Germany does not have endemic malaria transmission, cases contracted locally near aviation infrastructure are closely tracked by public health agencies.
In addition to the two fatalities, reports indicated that six other individuals were infected during the outbreak. Monitoring and preventive measures at the airport remain under review to prevent further risks associated with incoming international flights.
