Catastrophic flash floods across Nepal and along the Nepal-China border have left hundreds dead and thousands unaccounted for, dealing a severe blow to the country’s hydroelectric infrastructure.
Reports indicate that at least 626 people have been confirmed dead, while more than 3,000 individuals remain missing overall following the deluge. Among the missing are nearly 900 hydropower workers—with specific reports placing the figure at 898—who were working on projects devastated by surging floodwaters along the northern border region.
Severe Infrastructure Damage Reported
The intense flooding heavily impacted energy installations across the affected mountain corridors. Reports indicate that facilities belonging to Korea South-East Power suffered extreme damage, with approximately 90 percent of its hydropower assets destroyed in the disaster.
The destruction poses a major setback for Nepal’s energy sector, which has seen accelerated development in recent years aimed at expanding renewable power generation and regional energy trade.
International Response Underway
In response to the disasters along the border and mountain river basins, emergency assistance has been dispatched from neighboring countries. Rescue experts and emergency personnel from both India and China have been deployed to assist local authorities in emergency operations, search efforts, and worker extractions.
Search and rescue teams face significant logistical challenges as damaged roads and rugged terrain complicate efforts to reach isolated project sites and locate missing personnel.
